THE NHS HAS WITHDRAWN THE CONTRACT FOR GP PRACTICES TO PROVIDE SMOKING CESSATION SERVICES, THE SERVICE WILL NOW BE PROVIDED BY PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND - Below is how you can now access the service:

From the 1st of May 2020, GP’s and Pharmacies will no longer be able to provide stop smoking support via the contract they currently hold with Public Health Northamptonshire. We have made this fact sheet to clarify what support will be on offer once the Level 2 contract comes to an end, and to explain how you and your patients will be able to access help to stop smoking.

What support will be available to people wanting to quit smoking?

The Stop Smoking Service will be able to offer the following support to all Northamptonshire smokers looking to quit:  12 Weeks of FREE behavioural support    Tips and advice on how to stop smoking  Face to face and/or telephone appointments  County wide clinics, with appointments available Mon-Fri  A course of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)  An e-cigarette starter kit and 12 week supply of e-liquid  Champix pharmacy/GP referral letter

How can this service be accessed?  Self-referral: This can be done by phoning our helpline t:0300 126 5700, or by emailing e:smokefree@northamptonshire.gov.uk  Referral via NHS professional: You can call us on t:0300 126 5700, or if you would like to refer your patient using a secure email address, please send the clients name, address, and DOB to smoke.free@nhs.net.

Who is eligible to access the Northamptonshire Stop Smoking Service?

This is a universal service, and any Northamptonshire resident who is currently a smoker, or has quit within the last 7 days, can access the support we offer. Please note there may be restrictions on which products patients can use e.g e-cigarettes and Champix are 18+.

When does the Level 2 contract end and how does this effect primary care?

The Level 2 contract comes to an end on the 30th of April for all providers. No quit dates should be set after the 1st of March 2020. Public Health Northamptonshire will be unable to pay for any quit dates set, and subsequent quits, that are made after this date. After the 1st of March we ask that all practices refer their patients to the Northamptonshire Stop Smoking Service using the referral information above.
